Baseball: Lancers Go 3-1 Against Mayville State

Concordia, KS -

Mount Marty was forced to reschedule their home series with Mayville State and played down in Kansas for the second time this season. The Lancers were able to win three games and losing only one time. Mount Marty is now 17-4 on the season and off to one of the best starts in school history. 

Game One

Billy Hancock had the hot hand on Saturday, tallying four hits and leading MMU to a 16-7 victory over Mayville State.  Hancock singled in the first, doubled in the fourth, hit a grand slam in the fifth, and doubled in the sixth.

Mount Marty earned the victory despite allowing Mayville State to score four runs in the third inning.  Mayville State batters contributing to the big inning included #10, #42, and #5, all knocking in runs in the inning.

The Lancers got things started in the first inning when Bodi Wallar singled on a 2-0 count, scoring one run.

After Mayville State scored three runs in the top of the sixth, MMU answered with three of their own.  Mayville State scored when #7's sac fly scored one run for Mayville State, #19 singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, and #10 singled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run.  The Mount then answered when Will Gardner singled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run and Tyler Linch's sac fly scored two runs for the Lancers.

MMU pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning.  In the third William Johnson singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, Zane Salley grounded out, scoring one run, and Braeden Cordes singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.


Mount Marty tallied eight runs in the fifth inning. MMU's offense in the inning came from singles by
Cordes and Gardner and home runs by Hancock and Kiko Nunez.

Chris Rofe pitched for MMU and the righty allowed four hits and four runs over three innings, striking out four.  Zane Pollon, Aaron Madden, and Cooper Davis all put in work in relief out of the bullpen, steering their team towards the victory.

#20 took the loss for Mayville State. The hurler surrendered seven runs on eight hits over two innings, striking out one and walking one.

#34 started the game for Mayville State. The bulldog went two innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out one

The Lancers launched two home runs on the day. Hancock went deep in the fifth inning. Nunez went yard in the fifth inning.

MMU racked up 18 hits on the day.  Hancock, Cordes, Nunez, Gardner, and Johnson all had multiple hits for Mount Marty and  Hancock led the Lancers with four hits in four at bats.

Game Two

MMU wins the contest against Mayville State on Saturday,  4-2

In the first inning, Mayville State got their offense started when #10 singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

MMUknotted the game up at two in the bottom of the first inning, when Ethan Wishon singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.

The Lancers pulled away for good with one run in the third inning.  In the third Wishon doubled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Caden Eymann was credited with the victory for MMU. Eymann surrendered two runs on five hits over five innings, striking out one.  Noah McCandless and Aspen Dahl entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

#26 was on the mound for Mayville State. The pitcher went three and a third innings, allowing three runs on five hits and walking zero.  #14 and #13 entered the game as relief, throwing one and two-thirds innings and one inning respectively.

Wishon went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the team in hits.

Game Three

Mount Marty fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 4-1 loss to Mayville State on Sunday.  Mayville State scored on a home run by #7, a single by #38, a groundout by #42, and a double by #3 in the first inning.

Mayville State got things started in the first inning.  #7 hit a solo homer.

#9 was on the pitcher's mound for Mayville State. The bulldog went six innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four.

Jett Hasegawa started the game for MMU the righthander went five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking zero.  Heston Williams threw two innings in relief.

Josh Mares, Billy Hancock, William Johnson, Will Gardner, and Braeden Cordes each collected one hit to lead the Lancers.

Game Four

Both teams were strong on the mound Sunday, but the Lancers defeated Mayville State 2-1. MMU pitchers allowed just three hits to Mayville State.

In the second inning, Mayville State got their offense started when #3 singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

In the bottom of the third inning MMU tied things up at one.  Will Gardner's sac fly scored one run for the Lancers.

Mount Marty pulled away for good with one run in the fourth inning.  In the fourth Josh Mares hit a solo homer.

Jared Miller took the win for MMU, The righty went six innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out ten and walking one.  Noah McCandless threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

#16 led things off on the hill for Mayville State. The hurler allowed five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out seven and walking one.  #8 threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Mount Marty smacked one home run on the day. Mares had a homer in the fourth inning.

Mares, Billy Hancock, William Johnson, Gardner, Braeden Cordes, and Zane Salley all had one hit to lead the Lancers.

Up Next

Mount Marty wrapped up most of its non-conference schedule up on Sunday afternoon. The Lancers will now focus their attention to conference play in the competitive Great Plains Athletic Conference. Mount Marty will travel to Sioux City on Saturday March 18th to square off with Briar Cliff at 1:00 PM. The Lancers will then host BCU on the 19th starting at 1:00 PM.
