Lancers Sweep the Defenders in Final Home Series

Game One: Mount Marty University Lancers Pull Off Comeback Victory Against Dordt University Defenders

In a thrilling matchup between the Mount Marty University Lancers and the Dordt University Defenders, the Lancers staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 7-5 victory.

The game started off with both teams displaying solid defense, as neither side managed to score in the first three innings. However, the Defenders struck first in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs to take the lead.

But the Lancers didn't back down. In the bottom of the fourth, they exploded with six runs to turn the game around. Key singles from Janeah Castro and Reese Peterson, along with home runs from Kayleen Jacinto and Autumn Porter, tied the game up 4-4. Jr Olivia Valdez walked, while Makayla Hudson smoked a double to center field, putting both her and Valdez in scoring position. Sr Elisabeth McGill singled to right field, scoring Valdez and Hudson, putting the Lancers up 6-4.

Thanks to some Dordt defensive errors, Mount Marty was able to bring in one more insurance run, putting them ahead 7-4. In the top of the 7th, Dordt attempted to battle back offensively, but only scored one from K. Olsen's home run. Despite the Defenders' efforts to mount a comeback of their own, the Lancers' defense held strong, led by pitcher McKenzie Gray, who delivered a stellar performance on the mound, striking out six batters and walking two.

Game Two: Lancers Secure Shutout Victory Over Dordt University Defenders

In a pitching duel that showcased outstanding defensive efforts from both teams, the Mount Marty University Lancers emerged victorious with a 4-0 shutout against the Dordt University Defenders.

The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, with both teams' pitchers holding firm. However, Mount Marty broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth inning when Reese Peterson capitalized on an error to score the first run of the game. The Lancers extended their lead in the fifth inning with a power display. Elisabeth McGill's solo homer ignited the offense, followed by Reese Peterson's impressive two-run homer, giving Mount Marty a comfortable 4-0 lead.

On the defensive side, pitcher Makayla Graunke was exceptional for Mount Marty, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing only four hits and striking out three batters.

Despite efforts from Dordt University, they were unable to overcome Mount Marty's solid pitching and defense, resulting in a well-deserved victory for the Lancers. These thrilling wins mark a significant moment for the Mount Marty University Lancers, showcasing their ability to overcome adversity and secure crucial victories on the diamond. After this sweep, the Lancers hold the 7th spot in the GPAC standings, putting them in post-season play.

"The sweep today against Dordt was exactly what this team needed. Coming off a hard weekend prior the team found a way to get two very important wins. We are excited to get to play two more regular season games and head back to the conference tournament. This will make six years in a row (excluding COVID) the program has made it to the GPAC tournament. It speaks volumes for the type of student athletes and all of the alumni who have paved the way for each team!" -Kayla Bryant | Head Coach
