Lancers Split at Home against Briar Cliff

Game One:

Mount Marty University Lancers started off their doubleheader against the Briar Cliff University Chargers with a strong 6-3 victory in the first game.

The Lancers took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Autumn Porter hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Kayleen Jacinto to score, giving Mount Marty a 1-0 lead.

In the following inning, Mount Marty extended their lead when Raegan Harper doubled to left field, bringing Reese Peterson home, making it 2-0 in favor of the Lancers.

Moving into the fourth inning, Mount Marty continued to apply pressure. Yankton's own Brooklyn Townsend singled, bringing Harper home, and increasing their lead to 3-0.

However, Briar Cliff didn't go down without a fight. In the top of the fifth inning, they managed to tie the game. Aubrey Chichurka singled to right field, bringing in two runs, followed by Rylee Cain's RBI single, evening the score at 3-3.

Mount Marty answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Harper singled to third base, allowing Sami Noble to score, regaining the lead for the Lancers at 4-3. Then, Townsend singled, bringing Janeah Castro home, extending the lead to 5-3.

The Lancers secured their victory in the first game of the doubleheader with a final run, winning 6-3. McKenzie Gray pitched a solid game with 3 strikeouts, going the distance for Mount Marty and earning the win.

Game Two:

In the second game of the doubleheader between Mount Marty University Lancers and Briar Cliff University Chargers, it was Briar Cliff who emerged victorious with a 4-0 win.

Briar Cliff got off to a quick start in the first inning when Kylee Lukes homered to center field, giving them an early 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Chargers extended their lead when Rylee Cain scored on a passed ball, bringing the score to 2-0.

Despite Mount Marty's efforts, they struggled to generate offense against Briar Cliff's pitcher, Georgia Krohn, who delivered an outstanding performance with 11 strikeouts. Autumn Porter, Reese Peterson, and Brooklyn Townsend all tallied one hit for the Lancers, while right fielder Sami Noble tallied two. Mount Marty could not capitalize on their hits, as 6 Lancers were left stranded throughout the game.

Briar Cliff added to their lead in the sixth inning when Cain singled, allowing Autumn Soter to advance to third and Kylie Wilhelms to score, increasing their lead to 3-0. The Chargers sealed the victory in the seventh inning when Jessica James hit a ball to left field, resulting in a defensive error that allowed Karis Gifford to score, making it 4-0 in favor of Briar Cliff.

Mount Marty's pitcher, Makayla Graunke, also pitched well with 5 strikeouts on the day, but Briar Cliff's offense proved to be too much for the Lancers to handle.

The Lancers will be back in action this Saturday, April 6th against the Hastings College Broncos. The games will be played at northeast Sertoma Field at 1 & 3 PM.
