All Athletic Director Andy Bernatow wanted for his birthday was a MMU Soccer win, and boy he got it. The Mount Marty University Lancers finished their weekend in Kansas with a great 3-1 win over the McPherson College Bulldogs this Sunday, September 1st. This marks a solid start to the season for the Lancers, improving their record to 3-2-0.
The match was tightly contested early on. McPherson College struck first, with Caitlin Buendia finding the back of the net in the 14th minute, assisted by Gracie Speltz. However, the Lancers responded resiliently, leveling the score in the 37th minute when Yanisa Hall scored an unassisted goal.
The second half saw the Lancers take control of the game. Sydney Wear put Mount Marty ahead in the 49th minute with a well-placed shot assisted by Hall. MMU solidified their lead with a third goal from Alessandra Lopez in the 60th minute, set up by Shyanna Reich.
Mount Marty's defense was strong, with Caitlin Guerra and Brooklyn McNac splitting time in goal and combining for eight saves. Guerra recorded five saves in the first half, while McNac added three more in the second half. The Lancers managed to keep McPherson College to just one goal despite the Bulldogs' 15 shots.
McPherson College, struggling to capitalize on their opportunities, saw their only goal come from Caitlin Buendia. Elizabeth Scheuerman, the Bulldogs' goalkeeper, had a busy day, facing five shots on target and making one save. The game also featured some heated moments, with a total of four yellow cards handed out— two each to both teams. Mount Marty finished with a total of 5 shots on goal and 3 corner kicks, while McPherson had 9 shots on goal and earned 9 corner kicks.
The Lancers look to build on this momentum as they continue their season. Their next match will be at home on Saturday, September 14th against Central Christian College at 3:00 PM.
