Mount Marty Edges Hastings in Close Battle, 58-54

Hastings, NE – February 5, 2025 – The Mount Marty Lancers pulled off a hard-fought 58-54 victory over the Hastings Broncos in a closely contested matchup. A strong team rebounding effort and clutch free-throw shooting helped the Lancers secure the win, improving their record to 9-14 (6-11 GPAC) while Hastings fell to 3-19 (2-13 GPAC).

First Half: Lancers Take Slight Edge

The first half saw a back-and-forth battle, with Mount Marty jumping ahead 31-29 at halftime. The Lancers' offense found success in the paint, led by Sutton Arend (13 points, 7 rebounds) and Tash Lunday (14 points, 6 rebounds). The Broncos struggled from deep, shooting just 28.6% (8-28) from three, but kept themselves in the game with second-chance points and solid defense.

Second Half: Clutch Plays Secure the Win

The second half remained tightly contested, with Hastings staying within striking distance. Jake Jensen (10 points, 5 rebounds) hit two key three-pointers, while Damon Opdahl (5 points, 5 rebounds) and Jared Lopez (5 points, 4 rebounds) contributed on both ends. Lunday's 7-for-8 free-throw shooting proved crucial in the closing minutes, helping Mount Marty hold on despite a late Hastings push.

Hastings' Myles Simon (16 points, 4 rebounds) and David Hageman (13 points, 8 rebounds) led the charge, but the Broncos couldn't capitalize on their chances in the final minutes.

Key Team Stats:

  • Mount Marty: 38.2% FG, 29.4% 3PT, 68.8% FT, 45 rebounds
  • Hastings: 35.8% FG, 28.6% 3PT, 66.7% FT, 32 rebounds

The Lancers' dominance on the boards (45-32) and second-chance points made the difference, allowing them to grind out a tough road victory.

The Mount Marty Lancers had key contributions from multiple players in their narrow road victory over Hastings. Here's a closer look at individual performances that helped secure the win:

Tash Lunday – Leading Scorer and Clutch Free Throws (14 PTS, 6 REB, 7-8 FT)

Lunday was the Lancers' most consistent offensive threat, finishing with 14 points and 6 rebounds. His ability to get to the free-throw line and convert (7-of-8) was crucial, especially in the second half when the game was tight. Lunday also knocked down a three-pointer and contributed defensively with a steal.

Sutton Arend – All-Around Impact (13 PTS, 7 REB, 3-3 FT)

Arend was aggressive on both ends, scoring 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting while leading the team with 7 rebounds. His effort on the glass and efficient finishing inside played a big role in Mount Marty's success. He also went a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line, showing composure in key moments.

Jake Jensen – Perimeter Scoring and Hustle (10 PTS, 5 REB, 2-8 3PT)

Jensen provided a spark from deep, hitting two three-pointers and finishing with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Though he struggled with efficiency (4-of-11 shooting), his ability to stretch the defense helped open up driving lanes for teammates.

Rugby Ryken – Playmaking and Defense (7 PTS, 4 REB, 1 AST)

Ryken had a solid all-around game, contributing 7 points, 4 rebounds, and an assist. His energy on the defensive end and ability to push the pace in transition helped Mount Marty control the tempo at key moments.

Damon Opdahl – Key Bench Contribution (5 PTS, 5 REB, 1-2 3PT)

Opdahl provided a boost off the bench, knocking down a three and pulling down 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. His rebounding effort helped Mount Marty maintain a big advantage on the glass.

Jared Lopez – Steady Presence Inside (5 PTS, 4 REB, 1 STL)

Lopez played his role effectively, finishing with 5 points and 4 rebounds while making key defensive plays. His ability to battle in the paint helped Mount Marty out-rebound Hastings 45-32.

Brandon Garcia – Playmaking Off the Bench (4 PTS, 3 AST, 4 REB)

Garcia contributed with 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, making an impact as a facilitator. He helped set up teammates for easy baskets while also playing solid defense.

Mount Marty will look to build on this momentum in their next game, while Hastings aims to regroup and snap their losing streak.
