Mount Marty Takes Down No. 15 Doane, 8-2
March 16, 2025 – Crete, NE – Behind a dominant complete-game performance from Slayder Watterson and an explosive fourth inning, Mount Marty took down No. 15 Doane, 8-2, in GPAC play.
Game Recap:
After a scoreless first two innings, Mount Marty broke through in the third with a sacrifice fly from Joe Gokie, plating Jalen Owens for a 1-0 lead. Doane responded in the bottom half when Sam Kwapnioski doubled home Logan Amickto tie it at 1-1.
The Lancers took control with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by:
Doane added a run in the fifth, again via a Kwapnioski double, but Mount Marty shut them down the rest of the way.
In the sixth inning, Bachman doubled in Owens, and Gokie followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 7-2. Tyler Vance tacked on an RBI single in the seventh, making it 8-2.
Pitching Dominance:
Slayder Watterson (W, 2-2) threw a complete game, striking out 10 and allowing just three hits over seven innings.He needed just 95 pitches to carve through Doane's lineup, walking none and allowing only one earned run.
Key Performances:
Turning Point:
The four-run fourth inning gave the Lancers a commanding lead and put Doane on their heels. Watterson's ability to pitch out of trouble sealed the victory.
Game Two
Mount Marty Falls in Walk-Off Heartbreaker to No. 15 Doane, 2-1
March 16, 2025 – Crete, NE – Mount Marty battled tough against No. 15 Doane, but a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth handed the Lancers a tough 2-1 loss.
Game Recap:
Both teams struggled to push across runs early, with Doane breaking the scoreless tie in the third inning when Logan Amick delivered an RBI single to bring home Carson Baker for a 1-0 lead.
Mount Marty answered in the fifth inning, as Ryan Bachman lined an RBI single to center field, scoring Lucas Kampshoff to even things at 1-1.
The game remained tied behind strong pitching from both sides, with Palmer Jacobs and Raidyn Steele keeping the offenses in check.
In the bottom of the ninth, Doane put runners on with a walk and an infield error before loading the bases. Amick then drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the game-winning run, sealing a 2-1 walk-off victory for the Tigers.
Pitching Battle:
- Palmer Jacobs (L, 3-1) was outstanding, tossing 8.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on eight hits with three strikeouts.
- Zach Hegge relieved Jacobs in the ninth and took the loss after issuing the decisive walk.
- Doane's Raidyn Steele worked seven strong innings, striking out five and allowing just one run on five hits.
- Ethan Merk (W, 2-0)Â pitched two hitless innings, walking three but escaping jams to secure the win.

With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, an error and a walk set up a bases-loaded situation before Amick's walk-off RBI walk ended it.

Mount Marty will look to bounce back in their next GPAC matchup.They will host Briar Cliff on Saturday at 1 PM before they head to Forest City, IA to take on Waldorf on Sunday with first pitch at 1 PM.
