Softball: Lancers Fall To Red Raiders

Game 1 Recap: Northwestern 7, Mount Marty 3

Sioux Falls, SD – March 22, 2025

Mount Marty fell behind early and was unable to recover against Northwestern, dropping a 7-3 decision in GPAC action.

Northwestern struck first in the opening inning, taking a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI double from Jori Hajek and an error that allowed another run to score. The Red Raiders added another in the second on an RBI double from Gwen Mikkelsento extend the lead to 3-0.

The Lancers got on the board in the third, as Janeah Castro continued her strong day at the plate, doubling home Ella Ray to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Northwestern quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two more on a fielder's choice and an error to push the lead to 5-1. Two more runs in the fourth, including an RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly, made it 7-1.

Mount Marty attempted a rally in the sixth. Megan Toplovich led off with a hit and came around to score on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Castro. Another run came across on a passed ball, bringing the Lancers within four at 7-3, but that was as close as they would get.

McKenzie Gray (4-7) took the loss for Mount Marty, going four innings while allowing seven runs on eight hits and five walks. Jacey Hayen provided two solid innings of relief, holding Northwestern scoreless while allowing just one hit.

At the plate, Castro again led the way, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Ray reached base twice and scored two runs, while Toplovich also crossed home plate.

 

Game Recap: Mount Marty Falls Short in 8-7 Battle Against Northwestern

Sioux Falls, SD– March 22 2025

Mount Marty put up a valiant comeback effort but ultimately fell just short against Northwestern, dropping a hard-fought 8-7 contest in GPAC action.

The Red Raiders jumped on the Lancers early, exploding for six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Northwestern's Gwen Mikkelsen set the tone with a two-run home run, and the Red Raiders capitalized on a series of walks and a Mount Marty error to build a commanding 6-0 lead before the Lancers could record three outs.

Northwestern extended its lead to 7-0 in the third when Mikkelsen struck again, doubling home Ashtyn Billings.

Mount Marty found its rhythm in the fourth, breaking through on the scoreboard. Megan Toplovich scored on an RBI groundout from Alyssa Sosky, and Makayla Hudson followed with an RBI single to bring home Lilinoe Nihi, trimming the deficit to 7-2.

After Northwestern added another run in the bottom of the fourth, the Lancers made their biggest push in the fifth. Nihidelivered a clutch bases-clearing double, driving in Toplovich, Janeah Castro, and Kayleen Jacinto to pull Mount Marty within three at 8-5.

The Lancers weren't done yet. In the top of the sixth, Castro came through with a two-run single, plating Abby Johnson and Hudson to make it a one-run game at 8-7.

With momentum on their side, Mount Marty threatened again in the seventh, but Northwestern's defense held strong, securing the narrow victory.
