Baseball: Lancers Split With Dordt

Mount Marty Rallies for 8-6 Victory Over Dordt

YANKTON, S.D. – A five-run sixth inning propelled Mount Marty to an 8-6 victory over Dordt in a back-and-forth conference battle on Friday. The Lancers improved to 15-9 overall and 4-4 in GPAC play, while Dordt fell to 12-18 (1-7 GPAC).

Offensive Surge in the Sixth

After trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Mount Marty responded with a pair of runs to tie the game. Ryan Bachman's sacrifice fly plated Jalen Owens, and Aidan Chang followed with an RBI single to even things up at 3-3.

The Lancers took control in the sixth, capitalizing on Dordt's defensive miscues. Owens drove in a run with a single, Bachman delivered a two-run double, and Chang added an RBI double of his own before Will Gardner capped off the scoring with an RBI single. The offensive explosion gave Mount Marty an 8-3 lead.

Dordt's Late Push Falls Short

Dordt didn't go down without a fight, pushing across three runs in the seventh. Logan Templeton, Morgan Wilkins, and Joseph Schlesselman each contributed RBI hits, trimming the deficit to 8-6. However, the Lancer bullpen held firm, with Zach Hegge recording the final two outs to secure his second save of the season.

Pitching Breakdown

Aspen Dahl got the start for Mount Marty, working five solid innings while allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Garrett Siemsen (1-0) earned the win with a clean sixth inning, while Hegge shut the door in the seventh.

For Dordt, Bennett Spronk pitched well through four innings, striking out six while allowing three runs (two earned). Reliever Daniel Buteyn (0-1) struggled in the sixth, surrendering five runs on seven hits, leading to the loss.

Key Performances

Dordt's Strong Start Leads to 4-1 Win Over Mount Marty

YANKTON, S.D. – Dordt used early offense and a dominant pitching performance from Jared Hughes to take down Mount Marty 4-1 in the second game of their doubleheader on Friday. The Defenders (12-19, 1-8 GPAC) struck early and never relinquished the lead, handing the Lancers (16-9, 5-4 GPAC) a loss.

Templeton Sparks Early Offense

Dordt wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice in the first inning. Logan Templeton delivered a clutch two-run double to bring in Carson Belcher and Jimmy Twombly, giving the Defenders a quick 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Dordt extended its lead when Templeton lifted a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Belcher to score and push the lead to 3-0.

Hughes Silences Lancer Bats

Dordt's right-hander Jared Hughes was stellar on the mound, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out two and didn't issue a walk, keeping the Lancers off balance throughout the game.

Mount Marty's Lone Run Comes in the Fifth

The Lancers' only breakthrough came in the fifth inning when Ryan Bachman grounded out to shortstop, bringing home Tyler Vance to cut the deficit to 3-1.

However, Dordt responded in the sixth when Joseph Schlesselman added insurance with a sacrifice fly, scoring Cade Williams to make it 4-1.

Lancers Unable to Rally

Mount Marty struggled to get anything going against Hughes, who retired the side in order in the final inning to seal the win.

Game Notes:

  • Dordt recorded just four hits but made them count, with Templeton driving in three runs.

  • Mount Marty finished with five hits, including doubles from Bachman, Vonnegut, and Kondo.

  • Jake Stolnack took the loss for the Lancers, allowing four runs (three earned) over six innings.

  • Jacob Walker pitched a scoreless seventh for Mount Marty in relief.
