Historic Win: Lancers Stun No. 7 Northwestern for First-Ever Victory Over Ranked Opponent

YANKTON, S.D. — Mount Marty football made history Saturday afternoon at Crane Youngworth Field, earning its first-ever victory over a nationally ranked opponent with a 24-14 triumph over No. 7 Northwestern College. The Lancers, who began their football program in 2021, improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in GPAC play with the statement win.

After a scoreless first quarter, Mount Marty struck first midway through the second. Rugby Ryken connected with Rodney Broadnax for a 22-yard touchdown to cap an 83-yard drive. Later in the quarter, Camden Vance drilled a 29-yard field goal to give the Lancers a 10-0 halftime lead.

Northwestern fought back in the third quarter as Carson Ness hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass to cut the margin to 10-7. But the Lancers responded with a grinding, 16-play, 75-yard drive early in the fourth, punctuated by a 2-yard touchdown run from Jhymir Pearson to push the lead to 17-7.

The Red Raiders closed the gap once more with a short touchdown run from Gardner Casey, but the Lancers sealed the upset minutes later. Malachy Harts plunged in from two yards out, stretching the lead to 24-14 with 5:30 left, and the defense slammed the door from there.

Ryken delivered a great performance, completing 21 of 33 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown, while also managing the offense against one of the NAIA's top defenses. His favorite target was Jacksen Wachholtz, who hauled in seven catches for 102 yards. Broadnax added two receptions for 25 yards, including the first-half touchdown.

On the ground, Harts led the way with 62 yards and a score on 16 carries, while Pearson contributed 21 yards and his key touchdown.

The defense forced two interceptions, both by Arthur Oliver, and generated consistent pressure with multiple tackles for loss. Cole Cripps and Asmerom Mahammad anchored the unit with strong outings in the trenches.

Mount Marty controlled possession for over 38 minutes, racked up 362 yards of total offense, and converted 9 of 17 third downs, wearing down Northwestern over four quarters.
