Game Recap: Arend and Edman Power Lancers to Gritty Road Win at Doane

Date: January 21, 2026 Final Score: Mount Marty 77, Doane 74

The Mount Marty Lancers (9-9, 8-5 GPAC) secured a pivotal conference victory on Wednesday night, fending off a furious second-half comeback by the Doane Tigers (10-10, 5-8 GPAC). Behind a dominant shooting performance and a monster double-double in the paint, the Lancers pulled back to .500 on the season and strengthened their position in the GPAC standings.

The Game Narrative: A Tale of Two Halves

Mount Marty played nearly flawless basketball in the first half. Their interior passing and high-percentage looks allowed them to build a comfortable 38-26 lead going into the break. The defense stifled Doane, holding them to just 26 points.

However, the second half saw the Tigers roar back. Led by Trevon Beckman's outside shooting, Doane exploded for 48 points in the final 20 minutes. The Lancers' lead dwindled in the closing moments, but clutch free-throw shooting and a crucial rebounding advantage allowed Mount Marty to escape Crete with the three-point win.

Lancer Statistical Leaders

  • Sutton Arend: Continued his tear through the GPAC, dropping a team-high 27 points on an incredibly efficient 11-of-15 shooting.

  • Jackson Edman: Controlled the glass and the paint, recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

  • Tyler Sandoval: Provided the definitive spark off the bench, scoring 14 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in just 14 minutes of action.

  • Damon Opdahl: Acted as the floor general, contributing 8 points and a team-high 5 assists.

Why Mount Marty Won

  • Surgical Shooting: The Lancers' shot selection was the difference maker. They finished the game shooting a blistering 58.0% from the field. While Doane relied on the three-ball (making 9), the Lancers' ability to score at will inside the arc kept them ahead.

  • Dominating the Boards: Mount Marty won the rebounding battle decisively, 35 to 25. Jackson Edman's presence on the glass prevented Doane from getting the second-chance points they needed to complete the comeback.

Points in the Paint: By consistently feeding Arend and Edman, the Lancers exploited Doane's interior defense, out-pointing the Tigers significantly near the rim.
