The Mount Marty University (MMU) women's basketball team opened 2026 with a statement victory, defeating Morningside University 67-58 at home on January 3.
The Lancers (10-6, 5-5 GPAC) utilized a strong middle two quarters and an aggressive defensive performance to push their record back above .500 in conference play.

Morningside held the upper hand early, taking a 14-10 lead after the first quarter. However, Mount Marty responded in the second, outscoring the Mustangs 18-10 to carry a four-point lead into halftime. The Lancers extended that lead in the third and held firm during a high-scoring fourth quarter, where both teams traded blows.
A key factor in the victory was Mount Marty's ability to capitalize on extra possessions. Despite shooting 38.9% from the floor, the Lancers drew fouls consistently, attempting 32 free throws (converting 20). Defensively, they were disruptive, recording 14 steals and forcing Morningside into 22 turnovers.

The Lancers saw balanced production from their starters, with four players reaching double digits:

Morningside Leaders
The Mustangs were led by a double-double from Lily Vollertsen, who recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds. Clancy Brown also tallied 10 points, while Jaeden Webb added 7 points and 5 rebounds. Morningside struggled from the perimeter, hitting just 13.8% (4-29) of their attempts from beyond the arc.
Key Stat
Rebounding and turnovers told the story of the game. While Morningside won the total rebound battle 40-42, Mount Marty's 14 steals and +6 turnover margin proved to be the difference-maker, allowing the Lancers to maintain control in the closing minutes.
