Lancers Stun #17 Northwestern: Mount Marty Shoots Lights Out in Orange City

Final Score: Mount Marty 83, #17 Northwestern 78

In a high-stakes GPAC showdown, the Mount Marty Lancers (7-8, 6-4) pulled off a massive road upset, toppling the #17 ranked Northwestern Red Raiders (13-5, 5-5). The Lancers leaned on a blistering shooting performance and a dominant interior game to secure the 83-78 victory.

Game Summary

The contest was a back-and-forth thriller from the opening tip. Mount Marty took a slim one-point lead (40-39) into the locker room at halftime, fueled by high-percentage looks inside.

The second half was a game of punch and counter-punch. While Northwestern's Jalen Langsy and Jesse Van Kalsbeek combined for 51 points to keep the Red Raiders in striking distance, Mount Marty's balanced attack proved too much to overcome. The Lancers shot an incredible 58.2% from the field, consistently breaking down the Northwestern defense to preserve their lead in the final minutes.

Lancer Standouts

  • Sutton Arend: Was nearly perfect on the night, leading the Lancers with 22 points on a stellar 9-of-10 shooting performance.

  • Jake Jensen: Provided a powerhouse performance in the paint, scoring 18 points and drawing enough contact to get to the free-throw line 8 times.

  • Jackson Edman: Displayed great efficiency, contributing 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting in just 20 minutes of action.

  • Tyler Sandoval: Provided a huge spark off the bench, adding 9 points and 5 rebounds in just 15 minutes.

The Deciding Factors

  • Elite Efficiency: The Lancers' shot selection was the story of the game. By shooting 58.2% overall, they negated Northwestern's eight made three-pointers.

  • Paint Presence: Mount Marty's starters in the frontcourt were relentless. The Lancers out-shot the Red Raiders from the charity stripe as well, making 17 free throws compared to Northwestern's 8.

  • Composure on the Road: Despite the #17 ranking and the hostile environment, Mount Marty committed only 9 turnovers, showing veteran poise under pressure.

Mount Marty will travel to DWU on Saturday to take on the Tigers.
