The Mount Marty University baseball team went toe-to-toe with one of the GPAC's top teams, splitting a fierce doubleheader against Doane University. The Lancers leaned on elite pitching and timely hitting to secure a dominant shutout in the opener before falling just short in a classic Game 2 pitcher's duel.
Game 1: Mount Marty 5, Doane 0
The Lancers handed Doane a rare shutout loss, using a clinical performance on the mound and a three-RBI game from Cooper Mlnarik to set the tone.
-
Pitching Clinic: Kaden Harris earned the win, scattering four hits over 4.0 scoreless innings. Tony Suarez was equally impressive in relief, tossing 3.0 frames of two-hit ball to earn the save and finalize the shutout.
-
Mlnarik's Double: Cooper Mlnarik provided the biggest blow of the game with a clutch two-RBI double in the 5th inning, finishing the day with 3 RBIs.
-
Owens stays Hot: Jalen Owens was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while also swiping his latest bag of the season.
-
Situational Success: The Lancers played "small ball" to perfection, with Daniel Vonnegut recording a sacrifice fly to help build the early lead.
Game 2: Doane 2, Mount Marty 1
The nightcap turned into a gritty defensive battle where runs were at a premium. Despite a strong performance from the Lancer bullpen, Doane managed to scrape across the winning run in the middle innings.
-
Early Lead: Mount Marty struck first in the 2nd inning when Jaycob Pascuzzi lined an RBI single to score Cooper Mlnarik.
-
Bullpen Strength: After Cade Sudbeck provided 3.0 solid innings of work, the Lancer bullpen (Aaden Anderson, Logan Bobzin, and Aspen Dahl) combined for 3.0 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief to keep the game within reach until the final out.
-
Offensive Effort: Tyler Vance, Jalen Owens, and Corbett Freeman each tallied hits, but the Lancers were unable to find the equalizer against Doane's Riley Plummer, who threw a complete game.
-
The Difference:Â Doane's Tanner Nelson drove in both of the Tigers' runs, proving to be the slim margin of victory in a game where both teams combined for zero errors.
