Lancer Football wrapped up spring ball with a gritty, high-energy spring game played in steady rain, giving it more of a "football weather" feel than a typical spring afternoon. The slick conditions didn't take away from the effort—in fact, it seemed to bring out the team's toughness. Offensively, the group showed steady progress, led in part by several experienced players who helped set the tone. Quarterback Rugby Ryken handled the wet conditions well, staying composed and making smart decisions throughout the game. Running back Kyle Hirsch ran with purpose, grinding out tough yards, while wide receivers Rodney Broadnax and Jacksen Wachholtz proved to be dependable targets, making plays even with a slippery ball. Up front, veteran offensive linemen David Grabow, Nick Bunkers, and Desmond Taylor provided leadership and physicality in the trenches, helping guide a unit that continues to develop.
The Lancer Defense matched that intensity and leaned on its experienced core to keep things competitive. Defensive linemen Brycen Mitchell and DJ Brown anchored the front, creating disruption and making it difficult for the offense to find rhythm. Linebackers Brock Lubbers and Cole Cripps played fast and physical, consistently finding the football and helping organize the defense. In the secondary, Aurther Oliver and Trevor Lambeth brought stability and communication, competing on every rep despite the challenging conditions. While these upperclassmen stood out, several younger players also gained valuable reps and showed promise throughout the day.
More than anything, the spring game highlighted the program's growth, depth, and direction. It wasn't just about a few individuals, but about a team continuing to come together. The leadership from the older players was evident, helping set the standard while bringing along the next group. Battling through the rain added an extra layer of adversity, and the team responded the right way. If this spring is any indication, Lancer Football is building momentum with a strong mix of experience and emerging talent heading into the upcoming season.
The Lancers open the season at Crane Youngworth Stadium with Clarke University on August 29th at 1 pm.
