Derrik Nelson enters his seventh season with the Lancer baseball coaching staff, serving as Assistant Coach while also playing a key role in the university’s Sports Information Department. In his dual role, Nelson focuses on the development of infielders and helps with the team’s hitting strategy, while also contributing to the promotion and coverage of Mount Marty athletics across all sports.

A proud alumnus of Mount Marty, Nelson earned his Bachelor’s Degree in K-12 Special and Physical Education and later completed a Master’s of Education in Coaching and Leadership. His commitment to the university extends beyond the field, helping showcase Lancer athletes through thoughtful storytelling, statistics, and media coordination.

As a player, Nelson was a cornerstone of the Lancer baseball team from 2011 to 2015, excelling at both shortstop and third base. He compiled a stellar .349 career batting average, collecting 160 hits, 8 triples, 116 runs scored, and 19 stolen bases. His outstanding performance earned him several conference honors:

  • 2012: 1st Team All-GPAC (3rd Base), Gold Glove Award

  • 2014: 2nd Team All-GPAC (Utility Infielder)

  • 2015: Honorable Mention All-GPAC (Shortstop)

Nelson’s competitive drive and leadership continue to benefit the current generation of student-athletes at Mount Marty. He lives in Yankton, SD, with his wife, Catelyn, and their three kids, Mack, Rooker and Bexxley.

Dedicated to excellence on the diamond and behind the scenes, Coach Nelson remains a vital part of the Lancer athletic community.
