A native of Faulkton, South Dakota, Cunningham grew up immersed in the game—his family managed the Faulkton golf course for over 30 years. That deep-rooted connection to golf has shaped his coaching philosophy, which emphasizes discipline, course management, and a love for the game.
Coach Darin Cunningham has fostered a culture of academic excellence and character within his program. He has guided approximately 12 student-athletes to Scholar-Athlete honors, reflecting his commitment to success beyond the field. Additionally, under his mentorship, Ted Bengston was recognized as a Mount Marty University Athlete of Character, exemplifying the values Coach Cunningham instills in his athletes.
Before joining Mount Marty, Cunningham spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the Yankton High School golf program. His dedication and mentorship during that time made a strong impact and laid the foundation for his transition into collegiate coaching.
Cunningham earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Dakota. Prior to his coaching career, he served as a dispatcher before becoming a Special Agent in Yankton, working in that role for 25 years, including six years as a Supervisory Special Agent.
His extensive professional background brings a unique blend of structure, communication, and leadership to the golf course. As head coach of the Lancers, Cunningham continues to build a competitive program rooted in consistency, integrity, and a strong team culture.
