J.D. Huberty joined the Mount Marty University Women's Basketball staff in 2024 as a Graduate Assistant and has since been promoted to Assistant Coach upon completion of his Master of Education in Coaching Leadership. In his expanded role, Huberty focuses on player development, leads recruiting efforts across the state of Minnesota, handles a portion of fundraising initiatives, and provides hands-on mentorship to the program's graduate assistants. He also serves as head coach of the Class B girls team at the South Dakota Three-Class Shootout, a role he has held since 2025.
A Minnesota native, Huberty earned his bachelor's degree in Psychology and Sport Management from the University of Minnesota Morris, driven by a desire to understand what motivates athletes and how to connect with them on a deeper level. He brings that same mindset to his coaching, leading with emotional intelligence and a relationship-first approach rooted in the belief that successful intervention begins with successful interaction.
Huberty carries that curiosity beyond the court as founder and editor of Reps & Research: Sports Science for the Modern Competitor, a weekly newsletter that translates peer-reviewed sports science into practical takeaways for coaches, athletes, and the next generation of sport professionals. Covering sports psychology, player development, coaching technology, and competitive identity, the publication reflects his belief that the gap between research and practice is where real competitive edges are found.
Prior to joining Mount Marty, Huberty built a coaching resume across multiple levels of the game. He served as a varsity assistant and C-squad head coach for Morris Area Girls Basketball, worked as Youth Basketball Supervisor for Morris Area Community Education, and gained AAU experience with the West Central Wildcats, working across multiple age groups and competition levels.
Huberty's commitment to athletics and youth development extends into the community as well. He served as Volunteer Coordinator for the 2025 Yankton Best Triathlon and has taught physical education at Missouri Valley Christian Academy.
