Baseball: Lancers Sweep Valley City State

Lincoln, NE--

The snow forced the Lancers to find another place for their home opener to the 2023 season. Mount Marty was able to find a field with no snow in Lincoln. Mount Marty swept Valley City State on the day. Game won the Lancers won 7-1 and game two MMU won 7-2. Mount Marty is now 8-2 on the season. 

Game One

Mount Marty jumped out to an early lead over Valley City State and took home a 7-1 victory on Saturday.  MMU scored on a home run by Kiko Nunez, a walk by Braeden Cordes, and a sacrifice fly by Will Gardner in the second inning.

The Lancers pulled away for good with three runs in the second inning.  In the second Nunez hit a solo homer, Cordes drew a walk, scoring one run, and Gardner's sac fly scored one run for.

MMU notched three runs in the fourth inning, the Lancers big bats in the inning were led by a single by Billy Hancock and a groundout by Bodi Wallar.

Chris Rofe was the winning pitcher for MMU, righthander went five innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out 11 and walking zero.  Caden Eymann and Jared Miller entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

The Lancers hit two home runs on the day. Nunez put one out in the second inning. Ethan Wishon had a long ball in the fifth inning.

MMU totaled ten hits.  Cordes, William Johnson, Hancock, and Wishon all managed multiple hits.  Wishon, Hancock, Johnson, and Cordes each managed two hits to lead the Lancers.  Mount Marty didn't commit a single error in the field. Hancock had  15 chances in the field, the most on the team.

Game Two

The Lancers scoreed more runs than Valley City State, takes victory on Saturday to the tune of  7-2

MMU knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the second inning.  Kiko Nunez singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

Mount Marty pulled away for good with one run in the third inning.  In the third Billy Hancock hit a solo homer.

MMU scored three runs in the fifth inning and put the pressure on, lead by a single by Josh Mares and a home run by Hancock.

Myles Brown was the winning pitcher for MMU, The righthander allowed five hits and two runs over five innings, striking out five and walking zero.  Zach Hegge and Noah McCandless entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Mount Marty tallied three home runs on the day. Hancock put one out in the third and fifth innings. Braeden Cordes went for the long ball in the fourth inning.

MMU collected nine hits.  Hancock and Mares all managed multiple hits.  Hancock led 2023 MMU with three hits in four at bats.  The Lancers were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Hancock had the most chances in the field with ten.

Up Next

Mount Marty will wrap up its three game series with Valley City State on Sunday. The Lancers will play at noon and will play one nine inning game.
