Baseball: Lancers Start Florida Trip Going 4-1

Mount Marty is on their spring break trip in Florida. The Lancers are starting off the trip on a high note starting 4-1 so far. The Lancers are 13-4 overall on the season. 

Game One
 

Mount Marty Holds Off Cornerstone for 4-3 Victory

In a closely contested matchup, Mount Marty managed to secure a narrow 4-3 victory over Cornerstone.

The game started with Mount Marty taking an early lead in the first inning as Kiko Nunez's double brought Evan Bock home. However, Cornerstone responded in the second inning, capitalizing on an error to tie the game at 1-1.

In the third inning, Cornerstone surged ahead with Andrew Meny's double, bringing in two runs and giving them a 3-1 lead. Mount Marty quickly answered in the bottom of the third, with Vaughn Deming's three-run homer propelling them to a 4-3 advantage.

From there, both teams' defenses tightened up, and neither side managed to score in the remaining innings. Mount Marty's pitching trio of Slayder Watterson, Clayton Chipchase, and Zane Pollon held Cornerstone at bay, allowing only one more hit for the rest of the game.

Despite Cornerstone's efforts to rally, Mount Marty's early offensive burst and solid pitching performance were enough to secure the victory.


Game Two
 

Cornerstone Secures 5-2 Victory over Mount Marty

In a game marked by solid pitching and timely hitting, Cornerstone emerged victorious with a 5-2 win over Mount Marty.

The scoring started early as Cornerstone took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with Andrew Meny's RBI double. They extended their lead in the second inning when JC Salinas tripled to center field, driving in two more runs and giving Cornerstone a 3-0 advantage.

Mount Marty managed to get on the board in the third inning when Vaughn Deming's double brought in a run, cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, Cornerstone responded in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly by Corbin Westerkamp, extending their lead to 4-1.

In the sixth inning, Cornerstone's Westerkamp struck again, this time with a solo home run, further padding their lead to 5-1. Mount Marty attempted a comeback in the seventh inning with Ethan Wishon's RBI single, but it wasn't enough as Cornerstone held on for the win.

Cornerstone's pitcher Lucas Vega delivered a strong performance, allowing only two runs over six innings while striking out ten batters. Ben Cunningham closed out the game with a scoreless inning of relief to secure the victory.


Game Three
 

Mount Marty Dominates Siena Heights with a 12-2 Victory

In a commanding performance, Mount Marty secured a decisive 12-2 win over Siena Heights.

Mount Marty set the tone early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Kiko Nunez's double drove in two runs, followed by a wild pitch that allowed Nunez to score, giving Mount Marty an early 3-0 lead.

They extended their lead with two more runs in the third inning, capitalizing on a sacrifice fly and an error to push the score to 5-0.

Siena Heights fought back in the fourth inning, scoring two runs on a walk and a bases-loaded walk, cutting the deficit to 5-2. However, Mount Marty responded emphatically in the bottom of the fourth, adding four more runs highlighted by Ryan Bachman's two-run double and Ethan Wishon's RBI single, stretching their lead to 9-2.

Mount Marty continued to pour on the offense, adding another run in the fifth inning with Nunez's second double of the game, bringing the score to 10-2.

In the eighth inning, Mount Marty sealed the victory with two more runs, courtesy of a two-RBI single by Will Gardner.

Pitcher Noah McCandless delivered a stellar performance for Mount Marty, allowing only two runs over 5.1 innings while striking out nine batters. Jay Neugebauer and Shane Miller provided solid relief pitching to preserve the lead and secure the win.


Game Four
 

Mount Marty Stages Late Comeback to Defeat Lawrence Tech 7-6

In a thrilling game, Mount Marty rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a 7-6 victory over Lawrence Tech.

The game remained scoreless until the third inning when Lawrence Tech took the lead with Zach Meier's RBI groundout, bringing in Jacob Erhardt to make it 1-0. Lawrence Tech extended their lead in the fourth inning when Joel Stirnemann tripled to right-center, driving in Kellen Banaszewski, putting Lawrence Tech ahead 2-0.

Mount Marty responded in the fifth inning when Kiko Nunez's single up the middle brought Will Gardner home, cutting the deficit to 2-1. In the sixth inning, Joe Gokie's triple to right-center allowed Evan Bock to score, tying the game at 2-2.

The game remained deadlocked until the top of the ninth inning when Lawrence Tech surged ahead. Trent Reed's single up the middle brought in Brady Rogers, putting Lawrence Tech up 3-2. Jacob Llaneza then delivered a crucial blow with a three-run homer to left field, extending Lawrence Tech's lead to 6-2.

However, Mount Marty staged a remarkable comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning. Vaughn Deming's single to right field drove in two runs, and with the bases loaded, Bodi Wallar launched a dramatic walk-off three-run homer to right field, completing Mount Marty's comeback and securing the 7-6 victory.

Pitcher Caden Eymann earned the win for Mount Marty, despite allowing four runs in the top of the ninth inning. However, his team's offensive heroics secured the victory in the end.


Game Five
 

Mount Marty Tops Ave Maria 6-2 Behind Strong Sixth Inning

In a competitive matchup, Mount Marty emerged victorious over Ave Maria with a final score of 6-2, powered by a dominant performance in the sixth inning.

The game remained scoreless until the second inning when Ave Maria jumped ahead. Luis Rodriguez-Gallo's double to center field brought in Cole Rasbury, putting Ave Maria up 1-0. Brian Williams extended their lead with a single to left field, allowing Connor James to score, making it 2-0.

Mount Marty staged a remarkable comeback in the sixth inning. Will Gardner's single to right field drove in Joe Gokie, putting Mount Marty on the scoreboard at 2-1. Kiko Nunez then grounded out to shortstop, but Gardner managed to score on the play, tying the game at 2-2. Ryan Bachman followed up with a single to left field, bringing in Garret Damico to give Mount Marty a 3-2 lead. Vaughn Deming then drew a walk with the bases loaded, allowing Ethan Wishon to advance to second and Bodi Wallar to advance to third, while Bachman scored, extending Mount Marty's lead to 4-2.

In the seventh inning, Mount Marty further solidified their lead when Kiko Nunez crushed a two-run homer to center field, bringing in Gardner and pushing the score to 6-2.

Pitcher Zane Pollon delivered an impressive performance for Mount Marty, pitching five innings and allowing only two runs. Clayton Chipchase came in relief and shut down Ave Maria, pitching two scoreless innings to secure the win for Mount Marty.

Despite a strong effort from Ave Maria, Mount Marty's explosive sixth inning proved to be the difference-maker, propelling them to victory.


Up Next

Mount Marty will end up playing a RV St. Thomas team on Thursday at 9 AM. They will play Roosevelt at 12:15 PM. MMU will then wrap up the Florida trip playing #1 Southeastern on Friday at 11 AM and then play #7 Bellevue University at 3 PM.
