Game One:
In the first game of the non-conference softball doubleheader between the Mount Marty University Lancers and Dakota State University Trojans, Mount Marty emerged victorious with a dominant 8-0 win.
Mount Marty wasted no time asserting their dominance, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Abby Johnson led off with a single and later scored on an error. Reese Peterson drew a walk and later came home on another error, giving Mount Marty an early 2-0 lead.
The second inning saw Mount Marty's offense explode, adding six more runs to their tally. Ella McNew was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in a run. Autumn Porter then cleared the bases with a triple to center field, extending Mount Marty's lead to 6-0. Olivia Valdez followed up with an RBI single, bringing Porter home. Another run scored on a fielder's choice, giving Mount Marty an 8-0 advantage after just two innings of play.
Mount Marty's pitcher, McKenzie Gray, was in top form, holding Dakota State's offense in check throughout the game with allowing just one hit while striking out three batters. Dakota State struggled to generate much offense, managing only one hit in the entire game. Madison Kovar came in for relief in the 4th inning, striking out two batters. Despite their efforts, Dakota State couldn't mount a comeback.
Game Two:
Dakota State got on the scoreboard early in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. However, Mount Marty quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs to take the lead. The second inning proved to be decisive as Mount Marty's offense exploded for six runs, extending their lead to 8-1. Key hits and patient at-bats helped Mount Marty build a comfortable lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. Megan Toplovich tallied two hits and one RBI, Kayleen Jacinto had one hit and two RBIs, while Elisabeth McGill and Sami Noble tallied one hit a piece.
Mount Marty's pitchers, Makayla Graunke and Jacey Hayen, were stellar on the mound, limiting Dakota State to just one run on one hit. They combined for a solid performance with 4 strikeouts and 1 error, shutting down Dakota State's offense and securing the win for Mount Marty. Offensively, Mount Marty capitalized on opportunities and displayed impressive plate discipline, drawing walks and driving in runs when needed. Their well-rounded performance both offensively and defensively contributed to their success in the game.
