Game Recap: Softball |

Softball: Lancers Fall To Warriors

The Mount Marty Lancers went the distance against one of the GPAC's top teams, battling Midland University in a pair of high-stakes defensive duels. While the Lancers' pitching staff turned in a heroic effort, the Warriors managed to escape Yankton with two narrow victories.

Game 1: Midland 3, Mount Marty 1 (9 Innings)

In an epic marathon that required two extra frames to decide, the Lancers pushed the 32-win Warriors to the absolute limit.

  • Lancer Iron Woman: Lainey Van Zee delivered one of the most resilient performances of the season. She threw a staggering 161 pitches over 9.0 full innings, striking out six and holding the Warriors scoreless through the first seven frames.

  • Clutch Response: Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the 8th, the Lancers showed their grit. Arin Eaton reached base and was driven home by a clutch, game-tying RBI single from Kayleen Jacinto to force the 9th inning.

  • Multi-Hit Performance: Kayleen Jacinto led the offense with a 3-for-4 day, while Kalli Boom and Brigid McGill each tallied two hits in the defensive struggle.

  • Extra Inning Heartbreak: Midland finally broke the tie in the top of the 9th with a two-run home run, ending the pitcher's duel.

Game 2: Midland 2, Mount Marty 0

The series finale was another tight contest defined by elite pitching on both sides, as the Lancers were unable to find the scoreboard despite a stellar outing from Jacey Hayen.

  • Hayen's Command: Jacey Hayen was excellent in the circle, throwing a complete game and allowing zero earned runs. She scattered six hits and struck out five, keeping the Lancers within striking distance until the final out.

  • Pitcher's Duel: The Lancers fell victim to a rare "no-hitter" performance from Midland's Mackenzie Groninga, who managed to keep the MMU bats quiet despite the Lancers showing great plate discipline to draw five walks.

  • On-Base Threat: Arin Eaton, Kayleen Jacinto, and Brigid McGill each displayed great eyes at the plate to reach via the walk, but the Warriors' defense managed to strand the runners.

  • Defensive Prowess: The Lancer defense was sharp behind Hayen, avoiding big innings and making several key plays to strand six Warrior runners.
