YANKTON, S.D. — Mount Marty University Head Women's Basketball Coach Allan Bertram announced today the promotion of J.D. Huberty to Assistant Women's Basketball Coach. Huberty steps into the expanded role after serving as a graduate assistant with the Lancers since 2024 and completing his Master of Education in Coaching Leadership. 

Since joining the Mount Marty staff, Huberty has developed into a key contributor to the program, with an emphasis on player development, recruiting, and relationship-building. He has worked closely with Lancer student-athletes both on and off the court while also taking an active role in fundraising initiatives and mentoring the program's graduate assistants. 

In his new role, Huberty will have a key role in the Programs recruiting efforts throughout the state of Minnesota while continuing his role in player development and contributing to the program's broader recruiting, fundraising, and day-to-day operations. 

Huberty's approach to coaching is rooted in his academic background in psychology and sport management and his belief that effective coaching begins with understanding the person before developing the player. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota Morris before completing his master's degree in Coaching Leadership at Mount Marty. 

"Coaching has always been about more than basketball for me," said Huberty. "I'm fascinated by what motivates people, what makes them believe in themselves, and what allows a group of individuals to become something bigger than themselves. Getting to do that work every day, alongside Coach Bertram and our staff, is something I'm incredibly grateful for. I'm excited to have the opportunity to take on more responsibility and continue investing in our players and this program." 

A Minnesota native, Huberty has built his coaching experience across multiple levels of the game. Prior to joining Mount Marty, he served as a varsity assistant and C-squad head coach for Morris Area Girls Basketball, worked as a Youth Basketball Supervisor through Morris Area Community Education, and coached with the West Central Wildcats AAU program across multiple age groups. 

Huberty has also continued to develop as a coach outside of the traditional college basketball setting. Since '24-'25, he has served as the head coach of the Class B girls team at the South Dakota Three-Class Shootout, providing an opportunity to work with athletes and coaches from across the state. 

Beyond his coaching responsibilities, Huberty is the founder and editor of Reps & Research: Sports Science for the Modern Competitor, a weekly publication translating peer-reviewed sports science into practical applications for coaches, athletes, and sport professionals. His work through Reps & Research reflects the same emphasis on evidence-based development, psychology, and competitive identity that informs his coaching philosophy.
