MMU Awards and NAIA Scholar Athletes

 

Mount Marty has selected prestigious student-athlete awards for the 2022-23 school year. Lanny Clark and Billy Hancock have been selected as the Female and Male Athlete of the Year for Mount Marty. Seth Wielbelhause was named the Albert Fernandez Champions of Character Award/Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character. Cali Davis was selected as the female recipient recipient of the A.O. Duer Award. 

 

Mount Marty University Female Athlete of the Year: Eliana Clark (Gayville, SD) (Track and Field)

Elianna Clark, a track and field athlete, capped off an outstanding year for MMU track this school year. Lanny placed at GPAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (3rd-60/4th-4x400/200-5th) GPAC Outdoor Track & Field Champiuonships (1st-100/1st-200/3rd-4x100/4th-4x400)  She was also an NAIA Indoor & Outdoor National Qualifier in the 4x400 and Outdoor National Qualifier in the 4 x100. Elianna has Mount Marty Indoor School Records in 60, 100, 200 (outdoor), 4x100 & 4x400 (indoor & outdoor). 

 

Mount Marty University Male Athlete of the Year: Billy Hancock (Wahoo, Neb.) (Baseball)

Billy Hancock, a baseball athlete, put together one of the greatest baseball careers in program history. Billy is a 3 year team captain and an ultimate leader. This season, Billy has a .344 batting average, 14 doubles, 15 home runs, and 46 RBIs. In his career, Billy is at or near the top of many offensive records here at Mount Marty. Billy has a career .374 batting average, 219 hits, 40 doubles, 12 triples, 53 home runs, and 178 RBIs and defensively one of the best catchers in the region. Billy is currently a 4x All Conference Selection, the 2021 GPAC Player of the year, and 2021 All American selection. On top of the on-field impact, Billy has been an incredible role-model and leader to all players involved in our program.

Albert Fernandez Champions of Character Award: Seth Wielbelhause (Fordyce, Neb.) (Track and Field)

This award recognizes a current student-athlete with at least a junior academic status who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, and campus and community leadership embracing the five core character values of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative, athletic achievement, and future ambition. As track and field athlete, Seth was an  NAIA All-American in Heptathlon and Decathlon. At the GPAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, Seth finished 2nd-HEP and 6th-60H and at the GPAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, he finished 1st-DEC and 4th-110H.  Seth finished 5th in the Decathlon at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Marion, Indiana with a school record 6,678 points.

 

A.O. Duer Award (Female recipient): Cali Davis (Elk Point, SD) (Track and Field)

This award recognizes a current female student-athlete who is a junior in academic status with a minimum 3.75 GPA and excelled in scholarship, character, citizenship, and playing ability. Cali was an NAIA National Qualifier in 400 (indoor & outdoor), 4x100 (outdoor) & 4x400 (indoor & outdoor). Set school records in the indoor 200 (25.88), indoor 400 (58.22), outdoor 400 (56.05) and ran a leg on the record-setting indoor & outdoor 4x400 relays.  Finished 2nd-200; 3rd-400; and 4th-4x400 at the GPAC Indoor Track & Field Championships as well as finishing 2nd-200; 3rd-400; and 4th-4x400 at the GPAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

 

NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete Program

The Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete programs recognize excellence in the classroom by NAIA-member student-athletes who are sophomores or above in academic standing with a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Students must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended one full year as a non-transfer or one full year as a transfer. The awards are given annually to outstanding student-athletes in the various sports in which the program is active and their respective teams are eligible for NAIA postseason competition.

Mount Marty University had 18 teams that had an athlete who received the Daktronic Scholar-Athlete Award. The Women's Track & Field team led the Lancers by having 13 athletes receive this honor, the Baseball team followed with 12 athletes getting the award. Overall, 76 Lancer Athletes earned this award in the 2022-23 school year.
