Athlete Spotlight: Slayder Watterson

Slayder Watterson: Pitching with Precision and Leading with Humility

In collegiate baseball, some athletes shine not only for their athletic ability, but also for their character and commitment beyond the game. Slayder Watterson, a Junior pitcher for the Mount Marty University Lancers, exemplifies these traits. He makes significant contributions to his team while embodying values like humility and a drive for continuous improvement.

Slayder Watterson is from Burley, Idaho, and a graduate of Burley High School, who brings a deep-rooted passion for baseball to Mount Marty. When asked about his choice to become a Lancer, Watterson highlights the rich history of baseball not only in the university, but also in the Yankton community. Additionally, he highlights the resonance between Mount Marty's core values—awareness of God, community, hospitality, and lifelong learning—and his own personal beliefs, further cementing his decision to become a Lancer.

Watterson's journey in baseball is marked by memorable achievements, including winning back-to-back legion state championships with his brother in 2018 and 2019. These triumphs not only showcase his athletic abilities but also highlight the strong bonds and teamwork that he has created through baseball. Beyond the field, Watterson reflects on the advice he has received from his mentors, notably his high school baseball coach, Devin Kunz. "Control the controllables," a mantra instilled by Kunz, is Watterson's approach to both baseball and life, emphasizing the importance of focusing on what one can influence instead of dwelling on external factors that he can't change.

Slayder Watterson is described by his teammates and coaches as reserved yet competitive, embodying humility along with a desire to succeed. This blend of traits makes him a valuable asset on the field and a role model for his peers, demonstrating that true leadership stems from a balance of confidence and humility. For Slayder, being a role model extends beyond athletic achievements. He believes that a great role model should have qualities of humility and a commitment to continuous improvement. He also highlights that great role models should never settle for mediocrity and always strive to be a better version of themselves.

On February 27th, 2024, Slayder earned the title of GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports pitcher of the week. Throughout the week, he showcased outstanding performance by pitching in two games, and only allowing 2 hits across 11 innings. In a shutout victory against Mayville State University, Watterson pitched five innings, striking out nine batters, and left the game without allowing a single hit.

As Watterson continues his journey at Mount Marty University, both on the pitcher's mound and in his academic pursuits as a business major, it is clear that his impact reaches far beyond the confines of the baseball diamond. Through his exemplary character and dedication to excellence, Slayder Watterson serves as an inspiration to his teammates, coaches, and the Mount Marty community.
