The Lancer track and field teams competed at home for the second consecutive weekend at the Mount Marty Invitational and Multi's at the Ruth Donohoe First Dakota Fieldhouse in Yankton, SD on January 17-18. At the meet which featured nine visiting teams and numerous unattached athletes, the Lancers broke two school records and claimed a total of six event titles.
Senior Logan Ferrari demolished his own school record in the 5,000 by running 14:50.21, taking nearly 15 seconds off his old record and cruising to an event win. Ferrari was also part of the record-breaking distance medley relay that ran 10:40.67. The team of freshman Joseph Cross, sophomore Zavio Prato, junior Jacob Kueny, and Ferrari took over six seconds off the old record en route to a third-place finish. Their time currently ranks third in the nation.
Cross and freshman Marc Jonathan Van Lien produced the other event wins on the men's side. Cross ran 8:58.33 to finish first in the 3,000, and Van Lien put up 4,585 points to finish first in the heptathlon. En route to his win, Van Lien won four of the seven events (long jump, high jump, pole vault, and 60H).
The Lancer men also produced three top-three finishes. Cross was runner-up in the mile (4:30.74), Prato was runner-up in the 400 (50.17), and sophomore Cooper Grotenhuis placed third in the triple jump (43' 0.5").
Juniors Josey Wahlstrom and Zelie Sorensen and sophomore Mya Zohner claimed event titles on the women's side. Wahlstrom won the pentathlon with 2,946 points and won three of the five events (high jump, long jump, and 800). Sorensen won the 200 with a time of 26.19. Zohner won the pole vault with a clearance of 11' 5.75".
The Lancer women also produced six top-three finishes. Runner-up finishes were claimed by freshman Paige Clausen in the pole vault (11' 5.75"), junior Alexis Even in the 200 (26.30), and senior Lexa Burtzlaff in the triple jump (34' 5"). Senior Ashinee George placed second in the pentathlon (2,901 points) and won one of the events (60H). The 'A' 4x400 (4:06.63) also placed second and featured Sorensen, Even, George, and Wahlstrom. Sorensen also placed third in the 60 (7.97).
Many additional top-eight finishes were produced by both teams. The Lancers will compete next at the two-day Concordia Classic at Walz Fieldhouse in Seward, NE on January 24-25.
