Lancers Post Big Marks, Multiple Wins at Sioux City Relays
SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Mount Marty track & field teams delivered an impressive weekend at the Sioux City Relays (April 10–11), combining event victories, NAIA top-100 performances, and a strong collection of personal bests across both the men's and women's squads.
The Lancers were led by a dominant showing in the sprints and relays. Sophomore Austin Gobel captured the men's 100-meter title in 10.85 after qualifying second, and added a third-place finish in the 200 meters (21.62), currently ranking No. 45 in the NAIA. Teammate Zavio Prato sprinted to a win in the 400 meters (48.78) and placed sixth in the 200 meters (21.84), giving Mount Marty a powerful one-two presence in the sprint events.
The 400-meter group showcased depth, as freshman Samuel Favaretto (49.65, PB), Bastien Furstoss (49.65), and Jet Janvrin (49.92, PB) all placed in the top eight.
Mount Marty's relay teams also turned in standout performances. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Janvrin, Favaretto, Furstoss, and Prato raced to victory in 3:14.89, a mark that ranks No. 8 in the NAIA this season. The men's 4x100 relay placed second in 41.80 (NAIA No. 39), while the women's 4x100 (48.91, NAIA No. 47) and women's 4x400 (4:00.02, NAIA No. 19) also recorded strong national marks.
In the distance events, the Lancers made a major impact in the 10,000 meters. Senior Logan Ferrari won the race in 30:28.24, the No. 2 time in the NAIA this season, while Joseph Cross finished third in a personal-best 30:45.05, ranking No. 4 nationally. Additional personal bests came from Drake Nemetz (1:57.88 in the 800m, 4:15.02 in the 1500m) and Carson Conway (4:08.88 in the 1500m). Â
In the hurdles and jumps, Jonathan Van Lien led the way with a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (15.79) and a first-place mark in the long jump (6.47m). Osiel Cantu added a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (55.60).
The throws group was highlighted by freshman Kellan Odell, who won the javelin with a throw of 57.74m. Jackson Schmidt also turned in a personal-best performance in the javelin (47.53m), moving into the NAIA top 100.
On the women's side, senior Zelie Sorensen paced the sprint group, placing sixth in the 100 meters (12.39) and fourth in the 200 meters (25.33), both strong marks within the NAIA rankings. Alexis Even followed closely in the 200 meters (25.46), also landing inside the NAIA top 70.
Freshman Whitney Wollberg posted a season-best 59.58 in the 400 meters, while Taylor Hinojosa (1:07.62) and Hannah Killinger(1:09.89) both recorded personal bests in the 400-meter hurdles, with Hinojosa moving up to No. 66 in the NAIA.
The distance events saw continued progress, as Lilly Whiteshirt placed sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase (13:07.77), ranking No. 79 nationally, and added an 11th-place finish in the 10,000 meters. Â
In the field events, Marissa Bawdon placed second in the long jump (5.06m), while Mya Zohner led the pole vaulters with a third-place clearance of 3.62m.
Mount Marty will is scheduled to attend the Northwestern Red Raider Open next weekend.
